Agribusiness

Agribusiness is primarily the Cane industry in Mauritius. The history of Mauritius is intertwined with the history of the sugar industry. This sector has evolved from a monocrop economy and a monocrop sector producing white sugar to a diversified cane industry producing special sugars, alcohol, molasses and ethanol. With the dismantling of a guaranteed price and abolishing quota with EU on sugar export, this sector has re-engineered itself to produce electricity from bagasse and producing special sugar. Today the export of special sugar has increased to 120,000 tons targeting niche markets.

Presently, the country is producing around 400,000 tons of sugar which is also being exported under the fair trade label.  Sugarcane is presently cultivated on 52,000 hectares, occupying 28% of the land area in Mauritius. Domestic consumption of sugar is about 40,000 tonnes per year.

BDO has been closely involved with the re-engineering of the sector and continues to accompany the players in a changing business environment both locally and internationally. BDO is also very active in assisting the local operators to export their know how mainly into Africa.
